Opportunities for Building a Quality Life

Building a world where Black people live in communities free from the vestiges of systemic racism and environmental degradation with full access to opportunities for building a quality life for Black children and families.

  • NBEJN works to empower members to be stronger environmental justice advocates through

    • In-person trainings and webinars on legacy and emergent environmental concerns.

    • Theme training from capacity-building to sustainable organizing practices.

    • Technical trainings on topics such as municipal flood management planning and false climate solutions.

Member needs and interests inform the types of training we provide. We understand the importance of gathering in organizing and affecting change, therefore we facilitate safe spaces for power growth.

  • The National Black Environmental Justice Network resources members by:

    • Connecting them with funding and re-grant opportunities.

    • Education on the history and principles of environmental justice.

NBEJN piloted a regional hub leadership program in 2022 to support seven (7) grassroots community-based organizations in expanding their capacity.

They were allotted opportunities to attend trainings and convenings, both domestically and internationally, and supported in expanding their reach by connecting with other organizations in their regions.

Originally founded in 1999, our Network nurtures the tender relationship between the extraordinary pioneers of this movement and the vibrant leaders who are emerging. Advancing the Principles of Environmental Justice, which remain the bedrock of our work, requires grounding our membership in the works of the past, present, and future. As our network continues to grow, we look forward to expanding our resource offerings.

  • We plan strategies collaboratively with members on addressing environmental issues through policy advancement, rapid response, and working groups focused on health, education, and international solidarity.

Working groups are co-facilitated by NBEJN staff and elected leaders and meet quarterly to work towards annual goals, equitable policy and legislation, and solutions to community concerns.

NBEJN is proud to utilize the strength and lived experience of our community of senior activists and environmental expert members to offer rapid response support for urgent environmental justice concerns flagged by emerging leaders and community-based organizations.
